The Splendid Sampler Quilt Along

I normally do a Block-of-the-Month (BOM) at the Quilt Patch.  But, with our plans to move to Tennessee this year, I thought it was not wise to commit to a BOM where you have to present your completed block every month to the LQS in order to get fabric for the next block.  It really is a fun and inexpensive way to make a quilt.  Unfortunately, I have yet to complete any one of my four (4) BOM’s.  IKES!

Well, I thought I would try something new this year.  I decided to participate in The Splendid Sampler by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson and a host of many of my favorite bloggers/designers.  Every Sunday (starting 2/14) and Thursday a new pattern to make a 6″  block will be available.  There will be 100 blocks in total for an entire year!  The fabric requirement for this project is 30-35 FQ’s.  Click on the button below to learn more…

However, I am going to try to add as many other fabrics from my scraps and stash.

My 1st completed block!  Just ninety-nine more to go…

Since I didn’t get my new fabric in time, the first Splendid Sampler quilt will be a memory quilt using all the scraps from past projects.  Selecting fabrics for each block is a bit more challenging.  The blocks are not as cohesive as those folks that are using fabric collections.  Alas,  let’s give it a whirl!

I am going to post blocks in the order in which they were completed and either link back to the project where the fabric was used or include a picture, if not on my website.  I will also make good ideas on what I might change should I choose to take this journey again.

Past Project:  Tote Bags for Teacher Appreciation

Good ideas for next time…

  • Kona Snow was used for background but it was too heavy for these small pieces.  Select a lighter weight background fabric.
  • When building hearts, sew the top center background on each side of the heart first then the top outer corners.
  • It was difficult to get the + seam to match.  Sew the three hearts on right, two hearts to the big heart (different from the pattern).

Natalia’s pattern has a centered focus yet the fabric chosen for this block was used on a lovely charity quilt with an outward focus.

Good ideas for next time…

  • Press seams to the green on the blue/green HST’s and press seams to the red on the red/green HST’s this way the seams will nest when the two squares are sewn together
