Counter Bath Mats

Before we left for Tennessee on March 9th, I shipped four more counter bath mats to our daughter and son-in-law in Virginia.

I already had the blocks completed except for quilting and binding.  My quilting is much improved from February 15, 2014 when I made the first batch of four counter bath mats.

My favorite mat is the green and blue one and it is my SIL’s favorite too.  I absolutely love the backing & binding on it.  The fabric is by Kate Spain.  I only bought a FQ so I called the Quilt Patch and purchased the rest of the sale bolt (7 yards) to use on future projects.

If you ever wore contact lenses, it seems that you set the bottle of saline along with the lens case in close proximity to one another.  As you rinse each contact, the saline inevitably drips from your hand and on to the counter.  You pull a towel to wipe the drips.  Time in motion dictates a faster approach, so you use a wash cloth to set these items on to eliminate having to pull the towel to wipe the drips.

My daughter Lauren asked that I make something a little more decorative to leave on the counter.  I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to try a disappearing 9-patch block and also practice a new skill, binding.  Here are two of the four completed counter bath mats.

I also learned something very interesting about the use of solid fabrics. T0 marry print fabric with a cream background and print fabric with a white background on the same block, try using a cream fabric with white print (e.g. Moda Muslin Mates).

The remaining two counter bath mats were finished for the kids while on vacation.  Practiced quilting outside of Stitch-in-the-Ditch on my little Singer.  I think I need to get a Walking Foot for better results.  They actually look prettier than picture shows and we used one during our vacation.  What a great idea, Lauren!
