Baby Quilt for Molly Sue

This panel wall hanging, “Beauty is You”, was purchased at Alley Kat Quilt Shop in Marquette, MI during my Row by Row journey in 2014.  I thought I had purchased the panel set with the pink/orange/yellow girls as displayed in the store and shown on instruction sheet below, however when I opened the packet it revealed a different set of lovely girls.

Our friends had a new grand baby, Molly Sue.  I thought this would sew up quickly, which it did, to make a cute baby quilt.  It turned out so sweet even with the panel mix-up.  The outer border is mitered.  This quilt is being quilted by Mavis and hopefully I can finish binding and labeling it before our friend leaves for Colorado on May 29th.  I think I will make a pillowcase with the remaining small panels and fabric.

Our local quilt shop had a challenge to design a row for the shop.  The pattern I designed is called Water Winter Wonderland.  I will be including this row on my quilt this year.  The pattern will be updated to make a slight modification to the Wave Block.  The shop owner did not choose the row design but she did award a gift certificate to her shop.  Below are the blocks that I want to collect this year, however the out-of-state row patterns will be dependent on our summer travel plans.

Mini Quilt: Treasure Coast RV Resort

IMG_8403 IMG_8402

This mini quilt was inspired by our two week escape from the frigid North to the glorious South.  The camper pattern was collected during the 2014 Michigan Row by Row Experience with some awning and carpet embellishments I added.  The original pattern had pine trees which I replaced with a palm tree and the sun, two things not found in the North.  Since I am new to quilting, a wonderful quilting tutorial from the “The Inbox Jaunt” guided me through the quilting process for appliqué.

IMG_8088 IMG_8146

Here was the inspiration for this mini quilt.  Treasure Coast RV Resort in Fort Pierce, Florida is 10, 10, 10 in my book.  The managers, Bill and Diane, do a great job!  The staff and guests are warm, fun and friendly.  There are planned activities to enjoy, water aerobics, bingo, line dancing, cards, pool and entertainment to name a few.  We spent time exercising on our bicycles and swimming and came back lighter and more tan than when we left.  We met some great folks too: Marty, Connie, Allen & Cynthia, Joey, David, Debbie to name a few and had some wonderful neighbors Larry & Lois and Jerry & Dar.  My brother and his family came down for a visit and we visited with our long time friends, Tom & Suzie, who are snow birds in Delray Beach.  It would not have been as fun without our wonderful friends, Tracy and Linda, who shared our motorhome on Lot #149 and Mike and Leni who came down and spent a week in their camper on Lot #33.  I can’t wait to spend every winter glamping in Florida but it will be for months not weeks in years to come.

Demo Day at CQK

creative-quilt-kits-logo

Wow!  What an awesome day and way of learning about new tools, techniques and programs about quilting.  It was like taking several free classes all in a row (lunch included), free give aways and shopping, all day long.

Arriving promptly at 10am, I was greeted by the friendly CQK staff where I received coupon deals for the day, a ticket for free give aways, free lip balm and an emory board.  The shop was already packed with eager shoppers.  I had to refrain from shopping right away as I made my way to an almost full training room of eager students. I took a seat up front to enjoy all the demos that would occur throughout the day.

Sue distributed and demonstrated her Origami pattern and also shared the classes that she was scheduled to teach at CQK, e.g. Photography, Fabric Painting, Thread Painting and Circles.

She also had a booth where customers could create their own painted fabric.

10:30 a.m. Crazy Quilting – what is it exactly?

Next up was Sandee from Mid-Michigan Crazy Quilters who demonstrated “Build a Crazy Block” and she shared her personal embellishments on the crazy blocks she made.  I am thinking I might try a Quilt-as-you-go technique to make mug rugs with this pattern.  The Crazy Quilters group meets once a month at CQK in Brighton.

11:00 a.m. Latest new tools from Quilt Market

Jennifer  energetically showcased the Creative Grids Curvy Log Cabin Trim Tool (with free pattern) and the Stripology Ruler (plus 20% off Stripology book by GE Designs).  The training room was lined with beautiful quilts made with these tools.  I purchased the first and put the latter on my Christmas Wishlist.

11:30 a.m. English Paper Piecing

Andrea demonstrated how to do English Paper Piecing which is great quilting technique that can be done in the car or on a plane or anywhere where your sewing machine is not present.  The whip stitch is used to connect the different shapes, hexagons, triangles, squares to create your quilt.  She also shared the “Sew Together Bag” which is great to hold all your tools and a new tool which can hold up to 8 threaded needles.

Andrea will be teaching the Hex N More Class on November 18th.  This is hexagons and triangles machine sewn instead of by hand.  I took the opportunity to purchase the ruler for the class.

12:30 p.m. Twister quilts – quick demo on how to make these trendy quilts

Jennifer provided a demonstration on how to create the Twister quilts and wall hangings.  Sewing together two 4-patch blocks (in a column) containing four different colors boxed by background color is a quick and easy set-up for cutting with the Primitive Gatherings Primitive Pinwheels tool.  This comes in many sizes and the Itty Bitty size is on my Christmas Wishlist.

1:00 p.m. Electric Quilt Company 7 – design your own quilts –easy software

The Windows based EQ7 was demonstrated to the group to show how easily you can design your own quilts.  This product was recently released for the Mac.  I added this to my Christmas Wishlist too.

1:30 p.m. No fuss zipper insertion

Carol shared how to easily sew a zipper for totes and purses.  Another demonstrator provided details on hand appliqué.  Appliqué is great to use for pictures with a lot of detail.  It can also be done with your machine, as well as by hand. This is not one of my favorite techniques as it puts me to sleep because it is often a tedious and slow process.  The resulting quilt using this technique can be stunning because of the intricate detail that can be achieved with appliqué.

2:00 p.m. Latest new tools from Quilt Market

Jennifer did an encore of her 11:00 a.m. performance and also talked about the Quick Trim Ruler.  This item could be ordered at checkout.

2:30 p.m. What’s next after Row by Row ?—Post Card party!!

Carol from the CQK staff is the Michigan administrator of the Michigan Row by Row.  The 2015 program is Row by Row H20.  Free patterns can be collected from all 50 states from June 21, 2015 through September 8, 2015.  Twenty-five fat quarters are awarded to the first quilt turned into the shop and an extra gift, if that shop’s row is on the quilt.  Be sure to Like the Facebook page, Michigan Row by Row Experience.

The Post Card Party is a new program to create a post card from fabric and a double sided interface.  One side offers the format for the message and address and the other side is a unique quilting technique for the picture side.  The post cards you create are sent to a central location to be sent to other participants across the country and you get post cards created by some else in return.

3:00 p.m. Frenzy Swirl Table Runner

Carol demonstrated the wedge rulers (2 sizes) used to create the swirl table runner.  Two additional techniques were also shown to create table runners.

Prize Give-Away

Every half hour was a fabulous prize give-away.  You needed to be present to win.  I was very fortunate and lucky to win this awesome prize pack!

Breast Cancer Shawl Update

Breast Cancer Shawl

pameladianedesigns.com

The Breast Cancer Shawl for Kathy is nearing completion.  The appliqué is completed and the sashing/borders are done.  The eight upside down butterflies will be the back of the shawl and the center sashing will be opened once the quilting is completed.  The quilting will be a simple echo around each butterfly and the sashing will have a heart meander.

At the Quilts of Compassion Sew-in Event yesterday, Kathy stopped into The Quilt Patch.  What a surprise!  She looked wonderful.  She had her last chemo treatment this past Wednesday but also said that she would be having an additional surgery in two weeks.  Our prayers are with her and I truly admire her positive outlook.

Don’t forget that this pattern is free from FatCatPatterns.com

Breast Cancer Shawl

Today I started adding the appliqué to the blocks.  It’s a slow and tedious process.  I created the first block with the new fabrics.  Then, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to make a block with the original fabrics.  They both looked equally beautiful.   With Block 2, I used the paisley fabric for the ribbon so when I created Block 3 I used the pink fabric for the ribbon.  Block 4 was the red fabric as the ribbon with the paisley.  Here are the first 4 blocks together.

Breast Cancer Shawl

A couple weeks ago I learned the owner of our local quilt shop was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  I thought it might be nice to make her a Prayer Shawl.  My mom knits prayer shawls in Wisconsin but this will be quilted since I don’t know how to knit or crochet.  I found a very cute quilt on Pinterest that used a free pattern by Sindy Rodenmayer 2009.  It is the “Ribbon Butterfly” on a 12 1/2″ block.  It uses appliqué which is a new technique for me.  This is a favorite technique used by my friend, Shirley.  Several years ago my mom gave me a beautiful shawl and it will be the perfect pattern to create the Breast Cancer Prayer Shawl.  Sixteen 12 1/2″ blocks will be perfect for this project.  The weather is pretty awful here in Michigan and as soon as the roads clear, I am gonna head to her shop to pick fabrics for the shawl.  Here is the location to the free pattern:

I really like many of the patterns on this site, especially the angels for my friend, Lisa.  This is a BOM pattern under the Retail Patterns tab.
