2014 Michigan Row by Row Experience

I learned of this fun challenge during the Modern Traditions Shop Hop in June 2014 when Mary from The Quilting Season shared the program particulars.  Patterns were free from July 1 – September 2, 2014 and kits could be purchased for each row from the individual shops.  Patterns were removed from the shop shelves from 9/3-10/31, 2014 giving people time to complete the quilt (pieced, quilted, bound and labeled).  The quilt has to have a minimum of 8 different rows.  The first person to turn a quilt into the shop would win 25 Fat Quarters.  If that shop’s row was on your quilt, an additional gift would be awarded.

AQS Quilt Week: Grand Rapids, MI 2014

The AQS Quilt Week was held at the DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan from August 20-23, 2014.  This is the first large-scale quilt show that I have attended since  venturing into the world of quilting just three years ago.  In addition to the numerous quilt exhibits, there were a lot of different vendors.  Quilt shops~online and brick & mortar, sewing machine manufacturers, long arm quilt machine dealers and much, much more.  Since I am in the market for a long arm quilt machine, this was the perfect opportunity to try all the machines.  My two favorite brands of all that I tried were: Handi Quilter and APQS.

We spent two grueling days (August 20 & 21) pounding the pavement and I was glad we attended early.  The selections were much better and the crowds were smaller.  Parking was right across the street for $12/day.  Two single-day passes to the show was $20.16 for AQS members.  AQS membership is $25/year which includes an AQS pin, 6 issues of the AQS magazine, member discounts and a 10% discount at JoAnn Fabrics.  They offered great lunch stations (Hamburgers, Mexican, Chinese, Soup and Salad, BBQ and desserts) if you didn’t want to venture from the convention center.  A tote bag and t-shirt were $32 which included the pin free.  While you are allowed to take pictures of quilts for your own enjoyment, you are prohibited from posting pictures.  My favorite exhibits were: The Exquisite Quilts of Michigan’s Own Aileen R. O’Toole Stannis, Modern Quilt Challenge, Quilted in Honor, Ultimate Guild Challenge and AQS Authors’ Exhibit.

Teapot Cozy, Potholders & Mug Rugs

Wow, it’s hard to believe I haven’t posted for two months!

On July 21st, I headed to Douglas, Michigan for a week of R&R at the beach with my sister.  Of course, I brought my sewing machine and so did she.

The first project I finished was a Tea Cozy and two Mug Rugs for my friend Shirley’s Birthday.

The second project I finished were some potholders for my daughter Jacki made from left over terry cloth and home decor fabric.

The third project I finished was a Mug Rug for my niece, Jen.  This was the same fabric as her tote bag.  I was practicing quilting for my Hugs and Kisses Quilt.

The fourth project I worked on were Mug Rugs for my Mom, Aunt Betty and all my brothers, sister and cousins.  I haven’t finished binding them all yet but maybe that will be my project to finish today!
